'I try to not advertise it too much to the parents because I don't want the kids forced to go there,' said Lucas Harmon, who coaches the Happy Hollow team. Nathan began competing as an elementary school student, and this year, a team of sixth grade students from Happy Hollow Elementary School made it to state.Įager parents often encourage their children to participate, and some young students with siblings who've done Mathcounts start preparing before they're eligible to compete. One reason West Lafayette students are so successful at Mathcounts is because they start training young. Several students from the town have made the national championships, and in 2010, Mark Sellke, a student at Klondike Middle School, was the Mathcounts national champion. West Lafayette has a history of success at Mathcounts. He ranked second at the state competition, earning a place on the team Indiana will send to the national Mathcounts championships in May. This is Nathan's final year in Mathcounts, but he's not done yet. Unlike in middle school math class, 'you don't have to write tedious proofs in Mathcounts, so I like that.' 'It's really awesome being able to see something intimidating and break it down to the point where it's trivial but really elegant,' said Nathan Hu, an eighth-grade student at West Lafayette Junior High School. But for most, this competition is just for fun. With proctors roaming the ballroom aisles-watching students, passing out worksheets and then coming back to collect them-the students looked like they were taking a high-stakes test. 'You have to learn a little bit of everything.'Īt the state contest, students spent the morning doing written problems, first on their own, then as teams. They actually kind of involve some logic and you have to think more about it, rather than just numbers and just adding and multiplying,' Mario said. Still, Mathcounts is a challenge because the problems emphasize creativity over procedural expertise.

Mario - a seventh-grade student who's already taking high school level algebra - has always loved math, learning his timetables when he was in kindergarten.

But Mario's parents weren't surprised when he qualified for the state Mathcounts contest.
